Most people will diet at some
point in their life. Whether they are struggling to lose a
few pounds to be at their goal weight or are aiming for a
significant weight loss to improve their lifestyle and health,
many will seek some form of diet to help them achieve their
goals. Finding the right diet to fit your needs, lifestyle
and weight loss issues can be daunting and difficult at times.
It can be difficult to distinguish which diets will actually
work and which are simply crash or fad diets. Crash diets
can be alluring to those who have a small amount of weight
to lose and wish to do so quickly. These diets vary in consistency
but can involve complex eating combinations, liquid diets
or eating only one type of food. On the other side of diets
are those that have been medically proven to work or have
a long history of success. These diets often promote healthy
eating habits, changes in eating habits and a consistency
in calories and nutrients that does not deprive the body.
It is important to remember that not every diet is easy to
follow and it may take some trial and error to find a diet
that actually works for you.
Weight Watchers™ is one of the longest
running diets programs in the world. They have evolved their
plan throughout the years in relationship to new medical studies
and their client’s needs. For many, the success that
comes by doing Weight Watchers™ is directly related
to the support system that they provide to their members.
They offer online support and tools as well as weekly meetings
that are conducted by people who have lost the weight with
the program and are trained in the programs that they provide.
Along with the weekly meetings and online tools, Weight Watchers™
offers a variety of programs to follow, pre-made affordable
food and a monthly magazine. Weight Watchers™ has developed
a diet that not only focuses on losing weight but also in
controlling eating, changing eating habits and maintaining
a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise.
Jenny Craig™ is another popular program
that offers both online tools and weekly consultations in
one of their locations. They also offer packaged foods that
are designed to fit the diet that their consultants design
for you. By reducing caloric intake and decreasing
portions, Jenny Craig™ promotes a healthier eating lifestyle
but does encourage its members to stay with the program and
the food after they have reached their goal weight. Along
the same lines as Jenny Craig™ is NutriSystem™.
NutriSystem™ is an online weight loss program that provides
dieters with either set menus for the week or allows them
to mix and match different meals. The main idea of this diet
is to eat five times a day and only the portions that are
provided for you. Like Jenny Craig™, the packaged meals
can become tiresome and difficult to stay on for long periods
of time, also it is recommended you wean yourself of these
diets and still incorporate them into your life after the
weight loss. While these diets may not work for everyone,
they are a good way to learn to adjust your portion sizes
and food choices.
Other popular forms of diets include the low
/ smart carbohydrate diets, such as the South Beach Diet™
and the Atkins Diet™. The South Beach Diet™ incorporates
what they consider smart carbohydrates into a portion controlled
diet. They do not encourage high fat choices, but rather healthy
choices along side carbohydrates. Not all carbohydrates are
included and they also offer packaged food, cook books and
learning materials to aid in weight loss. The Atkins Diet™
is a no / low carbohydrate diet that allows for high protein
and in come cases high fat to be incorporated. The Atkins
Diet™ has been largely debated since it was first published
in the 1970’s and subsequent studies have shown no ill
effects for those who follow this diet for long term. The
most important message that both diets deliver is a reduction
in carbohydrates that are not necessary in a healthy diet.
There are still a wide variety of diets out
there that have been proven effective. The Medifast System™,
which has been studied at John Hopkins University, is considered
a meal replacement diet in which you replace all of your meals
with their supplements that include shakes, soups, protein
bars and oatmeal with the exception of one meal a day which
must include meat and green vegetables. This system also reduces
caloric intake to approximately 1,000 calories per day and
requires you to eat every two to three hours. Along the same
lines as Medifast™, is Slim Fast™ which has been
on the market for years and is readily available to the public.
Slim Fast™ also uses shakes and bars as replacements
for two meals and still promotes healthy eating habits for
your other meal. Using packaged goods as meal supplements
is an easy eating change that can stay with you even after
you end the diet.
There are so many diets and diet plans available
at this time, that it can seem very overwhelming when it comes
time to find the appropriate one for you. It is important
to remember and realize that for most diets, you must be your
own motivation or rely on family and friends to support you
through your lifestyle changes. This can be difficult for
some people, but more and more companies are offering support
via the internet and phone. It is also important to remember
that you should only be losing approximately two pounds a
week and reducing your caloric intake to dangerously low levels
can cause serious damage and can make weight gain much easier
once you go off that particular diet. Many crash diets and
fad diets result in weight gain once they are stopped. Also,
keeping the weight off and avoiding weight gain can be done
by still following some of the simple guidelines of any diet,
such as portion control, more frequent meals and by making
healthier choices in every day life, while still allowing
yourself a treat every now and then.
