Sugar Free Gum and Weight Loss
In a German study involving the chewing of sugar free gum that contains the artificial sweetener sorbitol, it has been found that people who consume 50 grams or more sorbitol have experienced diarrhea – resulting to weight loss.
Doctors were baffled when a female patient lost 24 pounds and a male patient lost 46 pounds due to diarrhea. The doctors were stumped as to the cause of the diarrhea and were only enlightened when they asked the said patients their gum-chewing habits. After testing these patients, they were found to have consumed quite a large amount of sorbitol, mainly from sugar free chewing gum.
The female patient was found to consume 15-20 sticks of gum each day while the male patient consumed 20 or more. With the high sorbitol level in their system, the patients visited the bathroom at least 10 times daily. After the patients were released from the hospital with strict instructions to stop chewing gums with sorbitol, they both regained some of the weight they lost and returned to one bowel movement per day.
Luckily, Americans are not at risk since the artificial sweetener commonly preferred is aspartame. Still, the public is warned about the possible dangers of chewing too much sugar free gums and must immediately stop doing so when diarrhea is experienced.
Why Sugar Free?
With the growing number of people suffering from obesity, it is not surprising that many choose to remove sugar from their diet and replace it with artificial sweeteners. Just like any other food, moderation is the key. The discovery that too much artificial sweeteners like sorbitol in the body can be linked to unhealthy weight loss is proof enough. Too much of a good thing has always been considered bad. Make sure you monitor the amount of artificial sweetener you consume daily to prevent health complications.
