AMA to Fast-food Chains, “Post Nutrition Facts”

With the proliferation of fast-food restaurants in the United States, it is no wonder that it comes with a considerable increase in the number of overweight and obese people. Having fast-food for a meal is normal in a regular American household. These fast-food restaurants offer hassle-free and convenient meals that are good enough for people on the go. But what is not good is the fact that these are also loaded with high calories, fat, sodium and other ingredients that are considered to be harmful to your health.

In an effort to counter the high-calorie foods and combat obesity issues, these restaurants have began offering healthier alternative foods so the consumer would have more choices. Apparently this is not enough. The American Medical Association (AMA) would like fast-food restaurants to post the nutritional information of the foods in their menus also. The AMA also wants the information to be simple and easy for consumers to understand. It should also include nutritional facts like calories, fat, trans fat, saturated fat and sodium content. The group believes that posting such information would be helpful in addressing the obesity issue since people would have accurate information on what they are including in their diets if they eat such foods.

Yes, posting such information might bring some help by providing useful information to discerning customers. But in reality, it is up to the people to decide on what to purchase and consume. Although, if they know the nutritional information of the foods in such restaurants, they might think twice about ordering that big burger loaded with cheese and lots of calories. These consumers, especially the overweight and obese ones, may turn into healthier eaters if they know such information. In effect, this could decrease the number of overweight people in the United States or probably even prevent its further increase.

Overweight and obese people should be more conscious of what they put inside their bodies. They should exert extra effort in making a lifestyle change. Instead of being tempted with the ultimate comfort food of burger and fries, they should order something with a much more nutritional value and less fat, like a salad minus the creamy dressing. Aside from eating healthy, they should also add some exercise in their daily lives. It can be any low-impact physical activity like walking around a little after eating a meal. They could also take some natural supplements to complement their weight loss programs.

Obesity is really becoming a big problem in the country and fast-food chains should play their part in solving this issue. Putting the nutritional information on the restaurants’ websites is not enough because not everybody has access to the Internet. They should post nutritional information on their menus so the consumers will be able to decide on the spot if they want to gain that much calories for a burger. Even if posting it on the menus would mean additional costs, in the long run, it is worth it if it would help combat obesity.
