If you weigh on the heavy side and would want to shed those extra pounds, you need to get on the program and make a lifestyle change. Consider the following tips from weight-control experts on how to effectively lose those unwanted pounds.

• Eat small, frequent meals. Begin by controlling the portion size of your meals. You can do this by using your hand as a portion guide. Normally, about three ounces of a meat serving would fit into your palm and a cup of potatoes is comparable to the size of a fist. Just try to limit your meal serving to that size even if you prepare your own food or dine out. It is also better if you eat regularly, about every three hours. Ideally in a day, you eat three moderate meals with three snack servings of about 100 calories each in between. Doing this would keep your energy up, your blood sugar level steady and prevent you from overindulging. Maintaining regular eating habits would keep your metabolism active and alive. That is the secret to losing weight.

• Form regular eating habits. Skipping breakfast would not do you any good. In fact, it may just lower your metabolism and that will not help with the weight loss at all. According to research, it is better to eat most food earlier in the day because this will prevent you from eating a lot at night. Another good habit to form is to start your lunch or dinner with a broth-based soup or a vegetable salad, minus the creamy dressings. Doing this will make you fill up first with a lot of low-calorie food. In effect, you would end up eating less of the other foods that are usually loaded with calories.

• Stay away from sweetened drinks. Soda, fruit juice, alcohol, sweetened coffee and tea have calories that you can live without. If you really need your soda fix, just adjust your diet to accommodate the extra calories in the drink. Yes, there are other low-calorie drinks but the best one for dieters is still water.

• Be natural. Take natural weight-loss supplements like Hoodia Gordonii to make sure that you keep those unwanted pounds at bay.

• Exercise, exercise and exercise. You must have heard it a thousand times but exercise is really the key to losing weight. You do not have to sign up in the gym to do so. You can start by simply walking around. Experts say that walking for about 90 minutes a day would keep the weight off forever.

• Surround yourself with people who support you. If you want to lose weight, you have to be around people who are conscious about what they eat also. It would be hard to lose weight if you hang around with the big eaters. Losing weight would be easier if you hang out with people who have the same goal.

All these tips, coupled with determination and discipline, would help you lose weight effectively.
