Dealing with Wrong Body Image Perceptions

If you weigh on the heavy side and had to assess your own body image, would you be able to correctly classify if you were either just overweight or obese? According to a new National Consumers League (NCL) study, there is an obvious difference in the way people perceive their weight and their actual weight as measured by the body mass index (BMI). It was reported that around 66 percent of adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese, but NCL said that only 12 percent of those say that they have been informed by a doctor or other health care personnel that they were actually obese.

Obesity is a serious problem. It has become more serious now since there are a lot of overweight or obese people in the U.S. Although you might not want to be identified as obese because of the stigma associated with it, you should still find out if you fall under this category so you can do something about it. The best way to measure obesity is with the BMI (body mass indicator) calculator. This is how you would know if you were overweight, obese, severely obese or morbidly obese. Even if obesity may be viewed as a legitimate disease, you still have to find out so you can get treatment for it. Treatment for obesity should be individually tailored. Your treatment program may be different from another person. Careful consideration should be taken to both biological and behavioral factors. Probably the only common thing that all the treatment programs have is the idea of a lifestyle change.

In order to lose the excess weight, overweight and obese people should consider a lifestyle change. This is the foundation of a successful weight loss program. You should make an effort to lose weight and also keep it off. There are other treatment options that help support this lifestyle change such as prescription medications, natural weight loss supplements and even surgery. But you have to consult a doctor first before choosing your own treatment option. You should get the treatment that is fit for you so you can undergo the weight loss program effectively, and along with it, improve not only your health, but your quality of life.

If you are not happy with your current weight and body image, stop making excuses and get on the program for weight loss. Go to a doctor and discuss with him about your plan on losing weight. It would also be helpful if you were informed about the health risks associated with your weight. Your doctor will most likely recommend a diet change and a specific exercise regimen. Those are the two most important aspects in weight loss. You need to improve your eating habits by eating healthy foods and having smaller meal servings. You also need to combine this with a regular daily exercise routine. There is really no need to feel embarrassed to admit if you are obese or overweight, you should feel more so if you do not do something about it.
